Back to: Archive · 2006 Head2Head: Julie Verhoeven & Graham Coxon From Dazed & Confused magazine, cover date: October 2006. Text: Iphgenia Baal. Photography: Retts Wood. ![]() Julie Verhoeven: I've been aware of Graham's work since the year dot. Graham Coxon: Because I'm that old. Julie sent me some of her drawings in the post, which was great because I'm very lazy, so it often takes people to clamp my head and force stuff in front of my face, which people don't often do. I really liked her drawings and that was it. JV: I thought about it after seeing a show of Graham's at the ICA a few years ago, it really hit a nerve. GC: That was just a load of stuff grabbed from my attic, dating back to when I was 18. JV: ...but very visceral. GC: In my case, there are all sorts of difficulties I face due to a lack of skill. Julie's work is done so simply. There is no excess, it is all symbols emerging from these splodges and stains and expanses of shiny colour. JV: I always try and be controlled and tidy but I work really fast and make mistakes, but I have ended up quite liking that. It takes my work somewhere else. GC: Well, very often with these things, the process is more interesting than the results. JV: On this project, we will both be working simultaneously, both be working from the same starting points. GC: You bombarded me with images and ideas, and we are both making work specific to this space. All I am trying to do is amplify the atmosphere. I want the piece to be very long and indistinct, because I don't want people to feel like it's repeating - like in a restaurant when the mixtape goes back to the beginning. It makes you feel like you should leave. JV: I'm going to make the room chock-a-block. There will be lots of stand-alone pieces, but I want the general feeling to be one of being overwhelmed. GC: The music will have a very dense structure. I'll put down something to go with the duration of the whole piece, like a pizza. You have your basic margarita, and then you put your anchovies on here, the olives there. It's just figuring out what combination works best. I have to admit though, I am quite nervous about the whole thing.
