Back to: Archive · 2005 'Demon Days' reviewed From Metro, 23 May 2005. Review by Ben East. Damon Albarn probably doesn't need to go back to his day job: Demon Days is uniformly excellent. Where the first Gorillaz album was a scrappy, dubby side project, this is the real deal. Much of the first half could easily sit alongside Think Tank's loose, experimental indie, while Albarn's mournful vocals and guitar are still anchored to rap's rhythms and dance music's bass. Demon Days doesn't have the sugary pop rush of the previous record but this is a darker, more coherent vision, swaggering with huge melodies within the disparate, synthesised styles. With ambition married to an accessible ethic, Albarn may have made the album of his career. Rating: 5 out of 5. |
