Melody Maker "Glastonbury 1998" pullout review of Blur's performance

Blur come on to "Girls And Boys", played we've-outgrown-it early. It's clever - softening us with the Benidorm Beat in order to make way for more self-indulgent slop, epitomised by Graham banging away during the new South Park-inspired song, not giving a shit what comes out. Damon, meanwhile, wants to be an enigmatic, spontaneous English Beck, but he still does his limb-dislocating pogos during 'Coping', he still headbutts the mic with blood clot-inducing ferocity during 'Popscene'. And - above all - he's still the best songwriter of our generation.

But to encore with 'Death Of A Party' and 'Essex Dogs'? To play 'Slow Down' [It was actually 'Repetition' - Blurcentral] off of - buggery bollocks - 'Leisure', released when a lot of people here were still slurping their Cow & Gate? No 'Vindaloo', as heavily rumoured? This is Blur at the stage where they're so huge the only creative way forward is to risk losing it all. In that way, tonight's a success.

Blur will never headline another festival again. Mission accomplished, Damon?
