Back to: Archive · 2001 Graham Coxon - Crow Sit On Blood Tree From Mojo magazine, August 2001. Review by Sharon O'Connell While Damon Albarn exorcises his interest in hip hop with Gorillaz, and Alex James larks about with comedy pop outfit Fat Les, the third moonlighting member of Blur once again pursues his abiding love affair with American alterna-rock. 'Crow Sit On Blood Tree' is Graham's third solo sojourn and pays less obvious homage to his American post-punk heroes than last year's 'The Golden D'. Recorded in two weeks, the DIY aesthetic still rules, but Graham's love of the rough'n'ready surfaces in back-porch blues with 'I'm Goin' Away' and in a Wesley Willis-like rant on 'Hurt Prone'. There are plenty of other surprises, including nods to early Dylan on 'Thank God For The Rain' and Hendrix/Cream on 'You Never Will Be'. Further evidence for those who believe that Graham is the most creatively restless member of Blur. |
