Back to: Archive · 1996 Blur boss: 'I treated Damon like a horse' from the NME, 11 May 1996 Blur's record company boss has described how he saved the band from obscurity by treating Damon Albarn like a horse. Andy Ross told the Blur fanzine 'Blurb': "Damon likes being provoked once in a while. He's a bit like a good horse - give him a good whip and he'll come up with the goods." Andy dished out the 'horse' treatment during the early stages of Blur's career, when the band were losing money. He added: "We gave them solid advice. They did need a big kick up the arse." Andy also reveals that Damon thought of ditching 'The Universal', Blur's Christmas single from last year, because his partner Justine Frischmann disliked it so much. "Damon originally wrote that a long time ago and it sounded a bit reggae-ish and it had totally different words," said Andy. "I said to him that it was a great song, but I think Justine didn't like it very much so I think he was a bit reluctant to persevere with it. I kept asking, 'How's 'The Universal' coming along?' and it did eventually turn up on the album." Andy also reveals that guitarist Graham Coxon lost his cat, which was named Bastard. He said: "Graham bought my flat off me. He lost my cat, Bastard the cat, which was rather unfortunate. That was my cat for ten years and he lost it. I wasn't very pleased about that. But we're all friends." |
