Back to: Archive · 1997 Blur gig preview. From the NME, 9 August 1997 Blur, who headline next week's V97 festival, are to play the remote Faroe Islands later this month. The gig is to be held at the Islands' Gundadalur Hall on August 27 and will be followed by a gig in Greenland on August 29 and one in Reykjavik, Iceland, on August 31. The only other well-known foreign band playing the Faroes this year are Status Quo. Last year, only Toto made the trek to the outcrop of islands, 300km north of Scotland, which are populated by 47,000 people and 70,000 sheep. Greenland is also rarely visited by pop groups and the country's cultural attaché contacted the band's management personally after being told of the gig as he thought it was a joke. Blur's spokeswoman told NME: "They're just doing this because they like the Nordic vibe. They just felt like it, even if they end up just playing to a couple of sheep." However, Rani Nolsoe, one of the leading commentators on the Faroe Islands' music scene and a worker at the Islands' cultural centre, told NME that Faroese pop fans were eagerly anticipating Blur's visit. He said: "There is a big music scene in the Faroes, but they are mostly folk rock, though there are some Britpop-style bands too. We're absolutely thrilled Blur are coming and we're really looking forward to it, though many people won't be able to afford to see them and see Status Quo too. Tickets will be about £25-£35 each. It's very expensive here." |
