"No to war - Damon backs the Daily Mirror campaign".

From the Daily Mirror, 22 January 2003.

Damon backs the Mirror's campaign

A host of stars queued up yesterday to sign the Daily Mirror's "Not In My Name" petition against war with Iraq.

Leading names from music, film and TV, plus politicians, sent a clear and determined message to Tony Blair - stop this madness now.

Blur's Damon Albarn kicked off the petition against war without UN backing as he protested with MPs outside the House of Commons. The singer was one of the first to sign our front page telling the PM: "I hereby register my opposition to any war with Iraq not justified by unequivocal UN evidence."

Damon said: "The Government has not been honest with us about the reasons for this war. I don't think the country has the stomach for this war and neither does Blair. It's not too late to stop it. A lot of musicians embraced Labour when they came in but many of us are feeling disappointed. We will hear a lot more from people in the public eye who are starting to galvanise a protest movement unlike anything that's been seen here for many years."

Damon and Massive Attack's Robert del Naja were meeting more than 20 Labour MPs at the Stop The War coalition's campaign. Hundreds of demonstrators waved Mirror posters at politicians, urging the Government not to go to war.

Robert said: "We are calling on Tony Blair to step back from the brink of war and get back to talking. He was elected by the people in Britain, not George Bush. The people are telling him they don't want war."
