RSS feed button

RSS

Many websites nowadays offer an RSS feed - a special webpage that you can subscribe to in order to receive news of any updates to that site, thus saving you from having to visit the site itself to check for new content.

To subscribe to an RSS feed you need to use a program called a feed reader (also known as a feed aggregator). There are three types generally available, all free to use:

a stand-alone program you install onto your computer (Feedreader, for example).

a web-based program (Bloglines and Google Reader are popular choices).

a browser-based program (the latest versions of Internet Explorer, Firefox and Opera all have built-in feed readers).

Subscribing with a browser-based feed reader is very easy. To subscribe to Blurcentral's RSS feed just click on the orange icon on the left of this page and, depending on the browser you use, one of the following will happen:

• Internet Explorer 7: The RSS feed is displayed and Internet Explorer gives a link for you to "Subscribe to this feed". Clicking this will add the feed to the Feeds toolbar.

• Firefox 3: The RSS feed is displayed and Firefox gives a selection of choices. Selecting "Live Bookmarks" and clicking "Subscribe Now" will add a feed folder to the Bookmarks menu on the Navigation Toolbar.

• Opera 9: The RSS feed is displayed along with a large "Subscribe" button. Clicking this displays a well-featured feed reader which can also be accessed via the Feeds menu on the main toolbar.

Of the above, Opera 9 is my favourite feed reader. They all have their pluses and minuses, however, so look around and see what you like!
